Tutoring Program

What is the Tutoring Program? Tutor1
We recruit volunteer tutors and match them with children who have experienced abuse or neglect and who are struggling academically. Often the trauma of the abuse or neglect along with the experience of entering foster care, possibly being separated from siblings and moving to a new school have a negative impact on academic performance. Our program exists to prevent them from slipping further behind in school and to provide them with a mentoring relationship with a stable adult.

What children are eligible?
Primarily children who have been placed into foster care from Greene County, Missouri. Children involved with Greene County Family Centered Services, in Permissive Placements and who have been adopted from Greene County foster care are also eligible.
How do I become a Volunteer Tutor?
We always need volunteer tutors. No teaching experience is necessary. We require our volunteers to be at least 21 years old and to pass a Child Abuse/Neglect Background Check and a Highway Patrol Background Check. Volunteer tutors with no formal teaching experience are required to complete a free basic one-time literacy tutor training provided by the Ozarks Literacy Council. All tutoring sessions occur in a public location and our volunteers average 2 hours per week (including prep time, travel time and a 1 hour tutoring session). We ask for a 1 year volunteer commitment (flexible around summer), however, most of our volunteers continue well beyond 1 year. Watching these special children succeed is a fantastic reward!
