A Conversation With…Tom Connor
Welcome to our new series, “A Conversation With…”! We’ll be featuring and celebrating volunteers from all of our outreach services. Each one is special and extraordinary–thank you, volunteers!
Our first profile is Tom Connor, a driver with Safe to Sleep since 2012.
“We talk often about our overnight volunteers, but our drivers are some of our behind-the-scenes folks who make the ministry more accessible,” said Safe to Sleep Program Coordinator Kelly Harris. “Imagine the women having to walk to and from the shelter–tired, cold, hot and carrying all their stuff,” she added.
After 37 years of route delivery work, Tom had a knee replacement and then worked for two years as an over-the-road truck driver.
“I always felt I was born to be retired, so I did!” Tom said. “But I’ve always wanted to do something to help people.”
His extensive commercial driving experience would lead him first to the Council’s RSVP program as a van driver, and then to Safe to Sleep.
“I guess I’m helping out in my small way. I continue to do it because it keeps my focus off what I don’t have and on what I do have,” Tom said.
Tom drives the Safe to Sleep van every Friday and Saturday, and has for more than four years! He’s great with the women, making them feel safe and transporting them with compassion and dignity.
“A thankful heart is good medicine,” he said.
We couldn’t agree more. Thank you for your service, Tom!
