We’re grateful to serve with over 100 partners distributing diapers in 52 Missouri counties, and we love hearing the stories that remind us every diaper counts.
One such story came from a partner in the Joplin area named Samantha, who shared about a recent encounter with a father who visited for the first time. With embarrassment in his voice, he explained that he was there to pick up diapers in the place of his wife, who was usually the one to visit the diaper bank, but was unable that day.
Samantha welcomed him and told him the only thing needed was each child’s name and diaper size. He provided the information while a volunteer carried diapers over to him and placed them in his arms.
“How much do I owe you?” the father asked, wondering what was expected of him.
“You don’t owe anything!” Samantha replied, “That’s it. The diapers are yours!”
Samantha could see a wave of emotion wash over the man as her words sank in. Tears welled up in his eyes—and then in Samantha’s—as he stood there in disbelief. He thanked her and told her how much the diapers meant to his family.
Samantha was happy to be able to offer the man not only diapers, but a judgement-free space where his family could be loved on.
Another story from our partner, Pattie, in Ash Grove touched our hearts: a young woman arrived with her head down, holding a tiny infant in her arms. Barely raising her eyes, she told Pattie her baby was only 2 weeks old, and that she had just moved to the area by herself.
Along with a set of diapers, Pattie also brought her stuffed animals, children’s books, and a supply of feminine products. At first, the woman was hesitant, asking if she might need to work to earn what she couldn’t pay for.
Pattie could tell she was weary and was used to fending for herself. She was touched to be the one to tell her what she’d been given was completely free.
The young woman immediately burst into tears, saying, “I didn’t know where to turn, and I can’t believe you’re giving this away!”
So many guests are shocked to learn there really are no strings attached. What an incredible joy it is to be able to give without asking anything in return!
